It is home to several major&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Coast_Guard\">United States Coast Guard<\/a>&nbsp;commands and cutters, including the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coast_Guard_Pacific_Area\">Coast Guard Pacific Area<\/a>. It is one of the largest Coast Guard bases on the West Coast. From 1942 until 1982, the island was the site of the Coast Guard&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Recruit_training\">recruiting training center<\/a>&nbsp;(boot camp), enlisting and training hundreds of thousands of Coasties including many of the 214,239 who served in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pacific_Ocean_theater_of_World_War_II\">Pacific<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_Theater\">European<\/a>&nbsp;Theaters of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\">World War II<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-very-dark-gray-color\">The 67-acre&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Island\">island<\/a>&nbsp;is situated in the historic Brooklyn Basin, now known as Embarcadero Cove.
